Townsville Port Expansion Declared To Be Significant

27th May 2011 – Treasurer and Minister for State Development and Trade Andrew Fraser on Wednesday welcomed the Coordinator-General’s decision to declare the $1.3 billion expansion of the Townsville Port a significant project. This is a reflection of the critical importance of the port and how the expansion is leading to potential economic growth.

Justifying the significance of the project, Mr. Fraser said: “When the Coordinator-General declares a project significant, he does so after considering the project’s scale, complexity of approvals, as well as the potential effects on the environment and infrastructure,”

Mr. Fraser added that the project is expected to create 250 new jobs during construction.

As the project lies within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, the next step of the process is to prepare for the environmental impact statement.
